Some questions for John Hugh Tate

How did you land in Jackson?
I spent a summer in seminary working in Jackson and saw great needs and opportunities here. Then towards the end of my time Boston I did two very wise things: 1) proposed to my wife Linda, and 2) we prayed about where God would send us. We were open to going anywhere. He opened a door to minister in Jackson. So we graduated, packed up a U-haul, and headed south. That was nearly 9 years ago.

What is your calling at Bellwether Church?
To preach the Gospel. To shepherd the people God leads to His church.

What is your favorite memory at Bellwether?
Thursday night, November 30, 2006. My wife and I committed to plant a church in Jackson - February 10, 2013 at Bonefish Grill. Those who were there know why.

What are your 3 favorite books?
Since I love to read, I can't narrow it to 3. The Bible as God's Word stands alone. After it, Mere Christianity & The Cost of Discipleship influenced my faith the most. The Robe is the greatest Christian fiction novel ever (in my opinion). For standard fiction, The Winds of War, War and Remembrance, All the King's Men, and For Whom the Bell Tolls.

What kind of music do you listen to?
Won't go there, so you know it's bad.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Stockholm, Sweden; Cape Town, South Africa; Israel; Lake Cuomo, Italy

What would people be surprised to learn about you?
I grew up wanting to be an actor & writer.
I have hitch-hiked a few times.

Which Bible verses are closest to your heart?
Jeremiah 1: 5 - "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations."
1 Samuel 16: 7 - "For the Lord does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart."
