Some Questions for Byron Knight

Where are you originally from, and how did you land in Jackson, MS?

I was born and raised in Jackson, MS.  I went through the public school system and loved every bit of it.  I landed back in Jackson after finishing school at Middle Tennessee State University with a music production/engineering degree, in 2007.  I opened my coffee shop, Sneaky Beans, in 2008.  Been here ever since.

What is your calling at Bellwether Church?

My calling at Bellwether is to try and use my musical knowledge and experience on tour with pink Floyd for 10 years and bring it to the service each Sunday morning.  And to grow with the church and the staff every day, spiritually and physically, and to recruit people to grow with us.  We are just normal people trying to grow together and raise more leaders for our community.  It’s pretty dang fun!

Who inspires you on a daily basis?

My family inspires me everyday.  Every single one of them.  I was fortunate to grow up in a great Christian environment with 3 incredible siblings.  Each one of them teaches me something new in some kind of way everyday.  Business or comfort or making a superman cupcake with no red dye or controlling a group of 6 kids at once (since I have 11 nieces and nephews) or patience or just how to make a paleo chicken tender since I’m not the healthiest of men- I like meat and potatoes and butter.  It’s the little things that inspire me.  Seeing people do simple loving things for other people inspires me the most.

What do you like to do with your free time?

I like to play all sports (disc golf, golf, soccer, basketball, softball, kickball, and all other grownup games)!  Anything outside and competitive is ok with me, and hanging out with my friends.  Recording music in the new studio takes up most of my free time though, that’s why I want my non-studio free time to be outside in the sun.  I love to cook too.  I cook a lot!

What are your top five favorite movies?

The Departed, the Ocean movies, the Sandlot,  it’s just too hard to name your favorite movies,  way too hard, and I love documentaries

What are your three favorite books?

The Bible, What’s Your Poo Telling You? (it’s important to know), and the Sweetwater catalog

What kind of music do you listen to?

Good music of all kinds, usually the first two albums that bands put out, before they start to get too commercial.   Radiohead, wilco, ryan adams, arcade fire, the national, etc etc.  But mainly I listen to jazz these days, mostly organ player jazz trios and stuff (Jimmy mcgriff, joey defrancesco, jimmy smith)

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

I would love to go to Europe on an English premiere league tour, catch a few games and stuff.  And of course play some golf while I’m there.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

I brush my teeth and shoot pool left handed shhh don’t tell anybody

Which Bible verse is closest to your heart, and why?

1 corinthians 13: 4

“Love is patient, love is kind, it isn’t jealous, it doesn’t brag, it isn’t arrogant….”

To me this verse just sums up how I want to be on a daily basis, it describes a ‘true man’ if you asked me.  To be yourself, and proud of it.  It’s humbling.
